Email Your Candidate Questions for These Locals Forums to Us

The League of Women Voters of Clallam County (LWVCLA), in partnership with the North Olympic Library System (NOLS)encourages all Clallam County citizens to submit questions for upcoming candidate forums. Candidate forums in advance of elections will take place via Zoom, allowing people from across the county a chance to see and hear the candidates.

Concise, unbiased questions directly related to the position, its policies, and the leadership skills required will be given priority, and similar questions will be combined. LWVCLA strives to ensure that questions reflect a wide range of concerns from the county, and questions are never released to any candidates in advance of the forums. Please submit your questions via email to info@lwvcla.org at least three days prior to each forum.

For additional information about the candidate forums, please contact Deb Cannon, Voter Services Chair at voterservices@lwvcla.org

Welcome to the Washington State Supreme Court Elections Visualizer!

This resource makes it easier to understand this year's critically important statewide elections for the highest court in the land.

The Washington State Supreme Court,
established on November 9th, 1889, consists of nine justices who are directly elected by the people to six-year terms, unlike the United States Supreme Court, where terms are for life. Also unlike the U.S. Supreme Court, justices on the state Supreme Court must retire at the end of the calendar year in which they reach the age of seventy-five.

Aside from being the final authority
on interpreting the Washington State Constitution and state law, Washington's Supreme Court is respected across the country and has historically enjoyed great influence. A Supreme Court of California study published in 2007 found that the Washington Supreme Court's decisions were the second most widely followed by the appellate courts of all other U.S. states in the period from 1940 to 2005, second only to California.

If you're a Washingtonian and a citizen, voting for justices is your responsibility. We hope you'll use this resource to learn about the positions and the candidates so you can cast an informed vote!

View the WA State Supreme Court Forum from April 27, 2026

This non-partisan forum was sponsored by the Yakima County Democrats. No candidates were given the questions in advance.

Candidates for Supreme Court Justice will appear on the Washington Primary election ballot in the summer of 2026. Five of 9 seats will be decided by the voters. As of April 27th, nine of 12 announced candidates participated in this forum. Judges from the municipal court to State Supreme Court face voters about every four years. Oftentimes they run unopposed, so the voters' choice is easy.

But this year, five of the nine Justice positions on the State Supreme Court will be on the ballot. Only one will be a Justice who has served a previous full term. Two are recent appointees by Governor Ferguson, and their challengers. And two positions are open seats with three candidates to choose from.

The election of Supreme Court Justices is a bit quirky. And voters need to pay attention in the Primary. If there are three or more candidates for a position, they will appear on the Primary ballot. If one candidate earns more than 50% of the vote in the Primary, they advance to the General Election ballot unopposed.

Candidate Forums - General Info

The Mission of the League of Women Voters is to empower voters and defend democracy. In carrying out this mission, the League of Women Voters of Clallam County continues to be a key sponsor of candidate and issue forums. For voters, these non-partisan forums encourage informed and active participation in government. For candidates and issue representatives, the forums provide an opportunity to answer questions important to the community and to personally inform voters about the issues.

The guiding principles of the League forums are to be fair and equitable to all eligible candidates; to both sides of ballot issues; to give voters direct access to eligible candidates and representatives of ballot issues; and to provide information so that voters can make informed decisions.

The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization that does not endorse candidates or ballot issues.
